The X16XE is a General Motors engine. It is a 1598 cc (1.6L) 16 valve, DOHC inline 4 cylinder engine.
The C20NE is a Family II fuel injected, four cylinder engine developed by General Motors in the late 80's. It is essentially very similar to the C20XE, but has a simpler cylinder head design which features 2 valves per cylinder (rather than the four of the C20XE) and single overhead camshaft.  For this reason, the powerplant is commonly referred to as '8 Valve'.  The C20NE was factory fitted to early Opel Astra and Vauxhall Cavalier models, but also found its way into the entry spec Calibra.  Subsequently, the fitment of the C20NE engine permitted the use of an automatic transmission, particularly in the Calibra where the C20XE developed excessive amounts of power and torque for the automatic box.  Although lacking the power of its bigger siblings, the C20NE has proven to be an economical and robust engine, with many examples still running flawlessly today.
