The Kadett E was introduced in 1984, and was voted Car of the Year in 1985, largely due to its advanced aerodynamic body styling. The 1984 model was also developed into a more conventional "three box" design with a boot (trunk), badged as the Vauxhall Belmont in the UK and the Opel Monza in South Africa. A convertible version was also available, for the first time in 1987, built by Bertone of Torino/Italy. For the 1984 model, capacities were raised to 1400, 1800 and a new 2000 cc engine, again used on the GSi and Vauxhall Astra GTE. In 1988, a 16-valve twin-cam version was developed for a high performance GSi/GTE model, yielding 156 hp (115 kW) in manufactured form.

The Kadett E has been seen as a grey import in the UK, however it is not as popular as the Vauxhall Astra.
The Chevrolet Cruze is a compact car produced by General Motors (GM) since 2008, replacing two unrelated cars—the Chevrolet Cobalt and Daewoo Lacetti. First introduced in 2008 for the South Korean market as the the Daewoo Lacetti, this replaced the car of the same name sold since 2003. The previous generation Lacetti was sold throughout Asia, Europe and Oceania as either a Chevrolet, Daewoo or a Holden. GM will replace this previous model with the new Cruze throughout 2009; using the same badge engineering strategy employed before. In North America, the Chevrolet Cobalt will be phased out and replaced by the Cruze from 2010.<ref>{{cite web | last = Spinks | first = Jez | date = 2008-08-22 | url = http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=56374 | title = Viva MkII! In the late 1980s and early 1990s, South African Kadett GSis were nicknamed the Superboss, equipped with a more powerful 2 L engine developing 125 kW, and were successful in touring car competitions in that country.

In North America, the Chevrolet Cobalt will be phased out and replaced by the Cruze from 2010.[1][2]

Underpinned by the GM Delta II platform, GM claims the Cruze was, "developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world".[3] Such locations include Bupyong, South Korea; St. Petersburg, Russia;[4] Shenyang, China;[5] Elizabeth, South Australia, Australia;[6] and Lordstown, Ohio;[7] where GM is investing more than US$350 million.[8]

The first renderings of the Cruze were revealed by GM at a press conference on July 15, 2008.[9] GM released the first official images of the Cruze on August 21 at GM Lordstown Assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio.[10]

Market

Australia

The Australian arm of GM, Holden, announced on 22 December, 2008 that its Elizabeth, South Australia production line would be split, and production of a local version of the Cruze sedan and hatchback would commence in 2010 to combat slowing sales of the larger, locally-produced Holden Commodore range.[11] It has been announced that the vehicle will be produced with four-cylinder direct-injection petrol and diesel engines.[12] However, Holden revealed that liquid petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG) and ethanol (E85) flexible-fuel powertrain technologies, plus a hybrid start-stop system, are all under consideration. These "alternative" fuel systems would allow Holden to take advantage of the Australian Government's AU$6.2 billion "Green Car Innovation Fund".[13]

Europe

The Chevrolet Cruze European model will feature four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, while the North American version will have a turbocharged 1.4 litre direct-injection gasoline engine.[3] The announced European models include following engine options: 1.6 litre petrol engine rated 112 PS (110 hp/82 kW), 1.8 litre petrol engine rated 140 PS (138 hp/103 kW), and 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine rated 140 PS (138 hp/103 kW) and 320 N·m (236 lb·ft) torque.

South Korea

The Chevrolet Cruze was launched in South Korea as the Daewoo Lacetti Premiere on October 30, 2008. It features a 1.6 litre 85-kilowatt (114 hp) naturally aspirated engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.[14]
